History of CNC Machines

Computer numerical control (CNC) is a technology that uses computers to control machines in manufacturing processes. It outlines a high-tech way to automate and precisely control the movements of tools and machinery in industries like metalworking, woodworking, and even 3D printing.

History of CNC Machines

The first CNC machines were built in the 1940s and 1950s, using existing tools modified with motors that moved the tool or part to follow points fed into the system on punched tape. These early mechanisms were rapidly augmented with analog and digital computers, creating the modern CNC machine tools that have revolutionized machining processes. This marked the beginning of industrialization.

However, it was not until the Cold War that the development of automation was addressed. At that time, the company Parsons Works was commissioned by the U.S. Navy to increase the productivity of its production line for helicopter blades. John T. Parsons then motorized the axes of the machines for making these blades. Working with IBM, he studied the possibilities of controlling these machines by computer. This was the starting point of the CNC machining method.

In 1952, Richard Kegg, in collaboration with MIT, developed the first CNC milling machine: the Cincinnati Milacron Hydrotel. Five years later, in 1958, he filed a patent for a “Motor Controlled Apparatus for Positioning Machine Tool”. This was the commercial birth of this technology.

Benefits of CNC Machining Services

Since the very first time a CNC machine was created it has had a huge impact in the modern industry. Nowadays there not only multiple types of CNC machining services that can cater to your different needs, but there is also a wide range of benefits from using CNC machining services like:

  • Highly accuracy and precision in cutting

  • Less waste material as a result of increased precision

  • Reduction of manual intervention resulting in decreasing of labor and operating costs

  • Uniformity in the final product across huge volumes

  • Enhance production times resulting in higher volumes
